BACK OF THE BUS: Fourten Day ‘06!
Today is April 10th. 4/10. Fourten Day! My day! Every year I make sure that I do something memorable, and this year is no different. Today I’m going to share my story with you. The reasons I think that you should take me and my column seriously. Or least enough to convince you to waste five minutes a week on me.
I cut my teeth, almost literally, on the Atari 2600 and the Commodore 64. Pong, breakout, Yar’s Revenge, Forbidden Forest, I was playing games before I could drink, smoke, vote, drive, or play T-ball. I lived through the ET crash and the NES golden age. Hours and hours not chatting about games but playing games. I’ve found the princess, killed Zeromus, rescued Super Joe, and saved the farm/town/city/country/planet/universe more times then I can count. I defeated the Mana Beast with one point of life remaining, cleared speed 9 height 5 on Tetris, and obliterated Sephiroth flawlessly in ONE ROUND. Why do I think I can talk about games? I’ve been there, and more.
What was your first job? McDonalds? Some movie theater shoveling popcorn? Me? I got a commission sales job: at 16. What was I selling? Games. Used games. For three years every game for every system passed thru my hands, and it was my job to know them inside and out or I didn’t make a dime. I not only had to know the games, I had to know the people who played them, they wanted to find that hidden gem in a system’s library and it was my job to find it. I was good at it, real good. I not only quickly replaced my immediate boss, but I outlasted seven others at my level and three mangers above me. All before age 19.
I know games, and I know gamers. Hell, I’ve even spent endless hours in Konami’s quality testing room (Broken Helix for PS1, skip it unless you’re a Bruce Campbell fan). I live and breathe gaming culture and I will continue to bring you my unique perspective on our world. I swear it on Fourten Day itself! (Not right away though, I just bought a 360).
