Culture Shock: Sony Nixes Rule of Rose for US Audience

Evidently the bigwigs at Sony Entertainment think that the US audience will object to the psychological thriller Rule of Rose. Citing ‘underage eroticism’ between girls at the primary reason they won’t be bringing this Japanese game to the US. Gee, you think with all the Hot Coffee, MySpace pedophiles, and FCC/Janet Jackson bullshit, companies wouldn’t put out anything that might offend the conservative mother of a two-year old.
Personally I find the fact that companies cite the reactions of conservative activists (who are outside their customer base) as the primary reason to not release a potentially successful game rather idiodic. They are basically rolling over for reactionaries preemptively.
I find that in a nation that’s supposed to thrive on acceptance, we are so narrow minded that we don’t seem to be able to grasp the cultural differences of other nations, and seem fit to impose our values on other nations *cough* MIDDLE EAST *cough*
That’s enough ranting from me. It mainly irritates me because I enjoy psychological thriller games like Fatal Frame, I also enjoy good scary movies too. I also can’t read Japanese, so I want them to translate the game so I can play it.

I think it’s a risk/reward issue, the Hot Coffee debacle cost Rockstar and the industry dearly in spite of the situation’s idiocy. This game will never sell enough copies to overcome the potential liabilities whether real or imagined.
